Fencing Competition in Monte-Carlo


A fencing competition will take place on Saturday 14 September 2013 in the afternoon, followed by a gala evening in the most prestigious room of the Société des Bains de Mer de Monte-Carlo (SBM): Salle Empire of the Hôtel de Paris.


Philosophy of the Event

Organisation of aFencing Competition” in Monte-Carlo under The August Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and the official support of the International Fencing Federation (FIE).

With the support of the Fédération Monégasque d’Escrime.

Against the background of the Centenary of the existence of the Fédération Internationale d’Escrime and with the latter’s support.

Against the background of the 150th anniversary of the existence of the SBM.

To bring the bygone traditions of the international fencing competitions, which were held in Monaco from the 1910s to the 1950s, such as the Coupe de la Marquise Chiavari, back to life, (The World Championships of 1950 were of especial note).

The Fencing Competition

▪ Monte-Carlo: in the Atrium of the Casino
A prestigious place to recall the mythical locations, namely the Terrace of the Opera and the Salle Ganne, where in the past numerous fencing matches and competitions took place.


▪ Duration: ca. 5-6 hours in one afternoonFencing competition in Monte-Carlo
▪ Participants: 
Well known fencing clubs with national-level fencers, such as:

- Escrime & Pistolet de Monaco
- Automobile Club de France (Paris)

- Lansdowne Club of London
- St Paul’s Fencing Club (London)

- Sala d’Armi Musumeci Greco (Rome)

- El Club de los Andes (Latin America)


- Some Eastern European clubs from Romania, Russia, etc.

- Looking further afield, clubs from countries beyond Europe, e.g. of the Gulf Region.



Gala Dinner

▪ To take place in the Salle Empire, the prestigious gala room of the Hôtel de Paris, a location reminiscent of the Ganne Room at the Casino de Monte-Carlo.

▪ In the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco
▪ Exhibition of stage fencing (*)
▪ Demonstration of fencing by Autistics youngsters
▪ The highlight would be an instance of sporting diplomacy by way of an example: a duel matching two fencers of opposed countries in terms of diplomacy. Some diplomats from both countries would be invited to attend.

▪ Presentation of symbolic cups & medals to:

- The « Champions of Friendship » medals to be presented by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco to the opponents of the “Duel for Friendship”

- The winners of the multinational competition (the Marquise Chiavari Trophy), to be presented by her grandson, Marquis Gian Antioco Chiavari.
